Snake Fence, drawing, 2016
April is
always a surprise for us up here in the backwoods. Some years the weather is mild with the snow
gone from the start, others it can present very unwelcome winter weather for
the first few weeks. As a parent, I can't tell you how aggravating a no school "snow day" is on April 15th! In this drawing I am meeting the
weather halfway. There is still patchy
snow on the ground but the lovely little yellow trout lilies have appeared.
They have these amazing spackled green and olive brown leaves that look very
fishy. Snake fences like this, made up
of grey split cedar rails, can be found throughout our bush connecting us to
that old homesteader who worked so hard clearing fields by hand. Fields that were reclaimed by the wilderness
ages ago.
