Metamorphosis, drawing, 2016
People across
North America have been closely monitoring the declining population of the
beloved monarch butterfly. And so, each July sightings are posted by friends
near and far on social media. And we hope that this year the tables will turn
for the better. What a miraculous
creature in all it’s stages! The monarch caterpillar is striped black, yellow
and white. I can’t even properly describe the colour of the chrysalis -sort of
turquoise or milky lime green? Best to just refer to the drawing I guess.
Don’t forget to include the gold (!) dots banded around its top and near the
bottom. Finally, the butterfly emerges in glorious orange, black and white. The
black body actually has white polka dots. Purple flowered and fragrant,
milkweed is the main food source of the monarch.
