Branch Pattern, watercolour, 2006

Looking at the forest through binoculars flattened the scene and inspired this image. I liked the horizontal striped pattern of the white snow on the branches and the varied purple and grey of the tree bark in winter. The pioneer author Catharine Parr Traill is most often quoted in this book because her upbeat descriptions of backwoods life in a log house without facilities reminded me of my own experience growing up in such a situation. (Yes, my parents were sort of hippies). The many challenges, harsh climate and poverty did not stifle her enthusiasm for the scenery and creatures.
